Frequently Asked Questions

The following Q & A answer some common ZXE series questions and a few general questions.

1. How do I know if I need a battery-backup ("BB") kit or a standard kit?

USE OF ZXE 5000 EXIT SIGN RETROFIT KIT IN EXIT SIGNS WITH BATTERY BACKUP

The ZXE 5000 exit sign retrofit kit only replaces the primary lighting source (incandescent bulbs or fluorescent lamps) that are on when there is uninterrupted 120-277 volt power to the battery backup exit sign. When the power fails, the battery backup exit sign uses the secondary lighting source that is in the exit sign when originally purchased/installed. Normally that light source powered by the battery is a pair of small 4-6 watt bulbs (they look like night lights and may be screw in candelabra base or wedge base). All of the circuitry that charges and switches to the battery upon power failure and powers the secondary lighting source (incandescent bulbs), must be left in as is in the battery back-up signs . Test to be sure that the 4-6 watt bulbs light up WHEN THE EXIT GOES TO BATTERY POWER MODE and that no wires to them have been cut or disconnected; this should be done by temporarily cutting off the 120-277v power or by pressing the battery test button.

Remember the battery, trickle charge and switching circuitry, secondary lighting sources all must be left in place and wired correctly for the battery back-up sign to work in battery mode when normal power fails. ZXE 5000 only replaces the primary lighting source during normal operations.

Be sure to read the complete instructions that come with each ZXE 5000 kit and the Radionic warranty.
